Bishop Verot moves on to final: Region 3-4A semifinal

By

FORT PIERCE Bishop Verot didn’t do much at the plate in its Region 3-4A semifinal Tuesday night, but starting pitcher Jonah Owenby made the little bit of offense stand up in a big way.
Owenby scattered four hits in a complete-game shutout for the Vikings, propelling them to the regional final championship game Friday with a 2-0 win over Lincoln Park at Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex.
Bishop Verot (24-6-1) will host Tampa Catholic in the regional final, with staff ace Jeff Passantino slated to start. A win would send the Vikings to their third consecutive appearance in the Final Four championship tournament in Sarasota.
“We knew it was going to be a close ballgame, and we knew they were going to be scrappy,” said Bishop Verot coach David Nelson. “We knew we had to pitch well and play defense, and we were very fortunate to score two runs.”
The Vikings opened the game on a high note with a run. An infield single by Seth DeHaven and two wild pitches allowed Passantino to come up with runners on second and third and just one out. The cleanup hitter grounded out to third to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
With very little offense coming from either club, Bishop Verot was able to pad their lead in the fourth behind three high choppers.
With one out, Richie Nizza topped a ball up the middle for an infield single. Then catcher Mike Richie chopped a high grounder over the third baseman for another infield hit.
Shortstop Bobby Brennan walked to load the bases before DeHaven’s groundout to shortstop brought in the second run.
All of it was enough for Owenby.
The left-handed junior hadn’t pitched in almost three weeks because of an ankle injury but showed very little rust from the layoff. He didn’t allow more than one hit in any inning, struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk.
“I felt like I had good control and good movement on it,” said Owenby, who improved his record to 5-2. “I stayed down in the zone and was able to get the job done.”
The Vikings also flashed some leather.
Brennan made an over-the-shoulder catch look very easy to open the third inning, while center fielder Evan Daugherty made a diving catch in left-center on a blooper hit to open the bottom of the sixth.
