Bishop Verot sends 12 ahead to college


In a packed cafeteria with about 100 students 12 Bishop Verot senior athletes announced where they would continue their athletic careers.

Of the 12 athletes, seven were from lacrosse, Alex Groeper, Austin Suarez and Marc Krispinsky will head to Division II Florida Southern College. Jesse Mitchell (Mount Olive College/Mount Olive, N.C.), Robert Thornley (Brevard College/Brevard, N.C.), Alexis Parks (Birmingham Southern/Birmingham, Ala.) and Austin Benacquisto (Washington & Lee/Lexington, Va.) will also play lacrosse collegiately.

Verot shortstop Jordan Honc will play at Florida Southern College and catcher Amber Plaza is headed to two-year Miami Dade College to play softball.

“It’s exciting but bittersweet knowing that I’m done with my high school career,” Plaza said. “Now I’ll have new teammates and a new family. I’m just excited to see what comes of it.”

Verot wideout DJ Oceant-Kelly will play the same position at Division II Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa. Quade Marinell, midfielder on soccer team, will play at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Also headed to the state of Tennessee is Verot outfielder Ismael Brito, he will play baseball at Division II Tusculum College in Tusculum, Tenn.



Derek Bass (Berry College, Ga.): The 6-foot-3, 175-pound defensive back has a 4.0 GPA and will join Division III Berry’s inaugural football team.

Chris Jasiak (Fayetteville State, N.C.): The 6-foot-2, 285-pound offensive lineman, a three-year varsity letter winner, will be part of new coach Lawrence Kershaw’s first recruiting class with the Division II Broncos.

Devante Ray (New Mexico Highlands): The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Ray, who led LaBelle in both receiving yards and sacks, is expected to play linebacker for the Division II Cowboys. Lehigh graduate Kenny Jackson is Highlands’ special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach.


Daniel Brito (Mount Union, Ohio): The 6-foot-4, 220-pound offensive lineman will join the Purple Raiders, who have won a record 11 Division III championships.

Edwin Etienne (Central, Iowa): The 5-foot-10, 230-pound offensive lineman, also a state heavyweight champion wrestling champion, will play for the Division III Dutch.

Kendall Beck (Franklin, Ind.): The 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back, who had 54 tackles and two interceptions for the Raiders last season, signed with the Division III Grizzlies.

Austin Young (Dakota St., S.D.): The 6-foot-4, 310-pound offesnive lineman will play for the NAIA Trojans.

East Lee County

Bryant Richardson (New Mexico Military College): The 5-foot-9, 185-pound linebacker, who led the Jaguars with 1144 total tackles last season, has signed with the Broncos, a Division I Junior College in Roswell.


Cypress Lake

Corey Gibson (Lynn): The 5-foot-11, 180-pound pitcher and outfield, who’s batting .322 with nine doubles, 25 runs scored and 20 RBI for the District 5A-13 champion Panthers, signed Wednesday with the Fighting Knights, a Division II program in Boca Raton.


Cape Coral

David Flynn (Aurora, Ill.): The 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard, who averaged 13 points and seven rebounds per game for the Seahawks, signed with the Division II Spartans.
