Hunter Wheeler recorded three hits and three RBIs in Blue Ridge’s 7-4 win against Wade Hampton in the Carolina Classic on Tuesday afternoon at JL Mann High School.
“I’m very proud of our guys,” said Blue Ridge Coach Travis Henson. “We have been able to get wins against two quality AAAA teams in the tournament.”
The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the seventh to capture an 8-4 victory over Easley in yesterday’s opening round matchup.
In Tuesday’s game, Wade Hampton jumped on Blue Ridge early building a 4-0 in the first inning. KJ Bryant led off the game with a double for the Generals. Bryant scored two batters later and went two for four on the afternoon.
However, the Tigers battle back. Wheeler recorded a single and drove in Jordan Brabo and John Mason Reynolds to cut the deficit in half.
After a rocky first inning, Tigers’ starting pitcher Kyle Foster settled in and did not allow a run over the next five innings.
“We hit the ball well in the first inning,” said Wade Hampton Coach Austin Lynch. “The Blue Ridge pitcher helped us out early by walking some of our guys. He made some adjustments and was very solid for the rest of the game.”
Brabo and Wheeler hit back-to-back run scoring doubles. The Generals took a 5-4 lead and never looked back.
Eastside (9-7) suffered a 9-4 defeat at the hands of Laurens. The Raider jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Eastside scored a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Eagles had runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth. Kyle Van Hoff stepped to the plate and drove a ball over the left field wall to cut the deificit to three runs.
However, the Raiders hit a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to secure Lauren’s victory.
Today, Eastside will host Wade Hampton at 3 p.m., while JL Mann hosts Blue Ridge at 6:30 p.m. Easley will also play at JL Mann High School at 4 p.m. against Greer.
