Both of Ankeny's volleyball teams are headed to state

By

Ankeny’s split into two high schools didn’t derail the community’s volleyball prowess.

Both programs qualified for next week’s state tournament in Cedar Rapids by winning regional finals Tuesday in Class 5-A.

Traditional power Ankeny High and first-year school Centennial will represent the city in the quarterfinals.

Ankeny swept Sioux City East and will make its 12th consecutive trip to state. Centennial topped Cedar Falls 3-1.

Both teams play at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the U.S. Cellular Center. They’ll line up on adjacent courts for 5-A quarterfinals, and could meet in the state final.

“It’s always good competition against Ankeny,” said Gabby Helmbrecht, one of Centennial’s six seniors. “And we want to play the best out there.”

Johnston, Urbandale and Dowling Catholic also qualified for state — all three were in last year’s 5-A tournament field, too.

Urbandale’s seniors are returning to state for the third time in their careers. The team qualified in 2010 and 2012.

Indianola beat Pella 3-1 in a 4-A regional final at Carlisle to clinch its first state berth since 1999.

Three defending state champs will return next week: 5-A Bettendorf, 4-A Charles City and 3-A MOC-FV of Orange City.

Class 2-A and 1-A regional finals will be held tonight.
