Appleton East 70, Xavier 66

At Appleton, Pierce Moriarty hit both of East’s field goals in overtime and Xavier’s three-pointer fell short in the final 10 seconds as the Patriots outlasted the Hawks in the Apple Classic.

East polished off the win at the free throw line.

Alan Lemons led the Patriots offense with 17 points, while Moriarty added 15, Michael Thome 14 and Sam Herrmann 10.

Sam Burkart had the hot hand for Xavier with 17 points, while Jack Orzepowski added 12 and Matt Ferris 11.

Appleton North 65, Fox Valley Lutheran 46

At Appleton, the Lightning raced out to a 15-4 first-quarter lead and kept the Foxes at bay the rest of the way.

Mike Lukashewich paced North with 15 points, while Jared Dudley added 14 and Ian Gerrity 10.

“We got some key guys in foul trouble early and that hurt us,” Fox Valley Lutheran coach Matt Koepsell said. “We got within six at one point, but couldn’t find enough energy to get over the top.”

Connor Buchholz led FVL with 12 points, while Aaron Hungerford added 11.

Kimberly 60, Wisconsin Rapids 37

At Wisconsin Rapids, the Papermakers raced to a 37-19 halftime lead then cruised to the title of the Just A Game Shootout tournament.

Ben Boots, who finished with a game-high 23 points, had seven points in each of the second and fourth quarters for the Papermakers (2-0), who have had limited practice time with seven of their 13 players members of the Division 2 state championship football team.

Tucker Paschen added 17 points, including seven in the first quarter, for Kimberly.

Whitefish Bay Dominican 56, Little Chute 50

At Whitefish Bay, Little Chute rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second quarter and a 10-point hole in the third quarter to get it to a one-possession game in the final minute.

Forced to foul, the Mustangs sent Dominican’s Tywon Bressler to the line in the final minute and he made both his free throws to seal the win. All told, Bressler made nine of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

“I’m very pleased with our overall effort,” said Mustangs coach Mickey Martin. “We handled the whole situation and dealing with (6-foot-10 Diamond) Stone’s size and length. Our kids really battled.”

DJ DeValk and Austin Gloudemans led Little Chute (2-2) with 14 points each. Stone had 20 for Dominican.

At Appleton, the Terrors had trouble executing their offense against Bay Port’s combination of man-to-man and 2-3 zone defenses in suffering the loss.

Matt Reader was the only West player in double figures, with 11 points, and the Terrors were held to fewer than 10 points in the second and fourth quarters. West (0-1) got to the free throw line only three times in the game.

At Fort Atkinson, the Wolves officially opened their basketball season a little more than a week after winning the WIAA Division 4 state football title, falling to the Crimson Tide in the Fort Atkinson Classic.

Zach Horn led Winneconne with a game-high 24 points and teammate Matt VandenBoogart scored 15.

At Clintonville, Kyle Quinn scored 12 points and Kyle Raddant added 10 as Shawano steadily pulled away to beat the Truckers.

Clintonville had a rough day from the field, hitting just 26 percent of its shots. The Truckers were seven-for-26 from the floor and three-for-nine from three-point range.

Andy Schmidt paced the Truckers with 10 points.
