Boys basketball: Poughkeepsie wins postseason opener

The third-seeded Poughkeepsie High School boys basketball team used a balanced attack to defeat No. 14 Harrison 74-47 on Friday in the first round of the Section 1 Class A tournament.

Jermar Dancy led the Pioneers (16-2) with 16 points. Jahleel Carter, Devin Lawrence and Josh Taylor scored 14 points apiece. Carter added five assists and Lawrence registered three steals. D’Andre Smith contributed three points and nine rebounds.

Harrison led Poughkeepsie 16-13 after one quarter, but Poughkeepsie bounced back with an 18-5 run in the second. Poughkeepsie scored 27 points in the third quarter to coast to the win.

“I think we had some excessive energy early that made us not as smart with the ball,” Poughkeepsie coach Brian Laffin said. “We settled down. The end of the second quarter and the third quarter were very good.”

Poughkeepsie will host either No. 6 Tappan Zee or No. 11 Riverside on Tuesday.
