On Wednesday, New Paltz High School’s boys golf team celebrated like it was 1999.
New Paltz won its first Mid-Hudson Athletic League team title since that year, defeating Red Hook, Spackenkill and Millbrook at Highland’s par-36 Apple Greens Golf Course. The Huguenots, who had an aggregate score of 165, were led by Sean Copeland (38), Wesley Watts (38) and Brian Pesavento (39).
“They’ve been great for us all year long,” New Paltz coach Kieran Bell said.
“We have a really solid 1-2-3 and they played some really good golf when they needed to. They were very steady. They had no birdies and no double-bogeys. It was fairways and greens and a couple of three-putts here and there.”
New Paltz’s Jimmy O’Connor was the Huguenots’ other scorer with a 50.
Spackenkill placed second with a 168, led by Erik Stauderman’s 36, which was the round’s low score. The Spartans’ Stanley Garrant carded a 41. Red Hook finished in third place with a 172, and had a low round of 39 shot by Tim Sutton. Millbrook, in fourth place with a 183, was led by Tyler Prater, who shot its low round of 41.
The MHAL Section 9 qualifier tees off today at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at Apple Greens. The top 20 golfers qualify for the Section 9 championships, which will be held in the spring.
