The Arlington High School boys soccer team, the defending New York state Class AA champion, knew what it would have to do to repeat as Section 1 champion, as the Admirals began tournament play on Friday.
“You have to defend and finish your opportunities,” Arlington coach Craig Sanborn said, “because you don’t get many.”
The undefeated, top-seeded Admirals made the most of their opportunities against No. 17 Ramapo, winning 8-0 in Freedom Plains after scoring two goals in the first two minutes.
“We created opportunities No. 1, and we finished them right away,” Sanborn said. “They really set the tone for the rest of the match.”
Bryan Ashong scored 45 seconds into the game, followed by Peter Garson 63 seconds later. Chris Shea added a goal before halftime. Arlington tacked on five more goals in the second half, scored by Shea, David Verdis, Nick Moses, Dillon Ashong and George Pogyo.
Arlington (16-0-1) will host No. 9 Ketcham on Monday. Arlington defeated Ketcham in both regular-season meetings.
“It helped because you know what to expect,” Sanborn said of the teams’ familiarity, “but I’m always a firm believer in you hate to see somebody a third time.”
