Boys soccer: John Jay edges Mahopac, will face Arlington once again

It’s Round 3 — John Jay vs. Arlington.

The John Jay High School boys soccer team earned a third opportunity to play the Admirals this season by defeating No. 5 Mahopac 1-0 in a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal in Wiccopee on Monday.

Fourth-seeded John Jay and No. 1 Arlington will meet in Wednesday’s semifinal at Freedom Plains.

“I think we’re just starting to pull together as a team,” John Jay senior Brian Vigorita said. “I think we have a strong chance. People are predicting them to win, but I believe in us. We just need to play smart and hope for the best.”

Ryan Metz scored the game winner for the Patriots (14-4) off an assist from Nate Mansfield with three minutes remaining against Mahopac.

John Jay coach Rob Seipp also adjusted his lineup after giving up five goals to Carmel in the sectional first-round match by moving Vigorita — an all-section defender in 2012 — from the front line to defense.

“Putting Brian in the back helped us out,” Mansfield said. “He was moved back because we were letting up a lot of goals.

“Arlington is a good team, but putting Brian in the back will help clean up things on defense. If we get a chance on offense, we have to finish.”

Arlington defeated John Jay twice during the regular season.

“Our teams know each other. It’s a rivalry. Bottom line for this tournament, it comes down to who makes fewer mistakes, and who can capitalize and put the ball away on those mistakes,” Arlington coach Craig Sanborn said.

“The boys will come out with a lot of heart, a lot of passion and we’re set up for a great match.”
