The Roy C. Ketcham High School boys soccer team scored three goals in the first 18 minutes and defeated district rival John Jay 6-1 in Wappingers Falls on Monday.
Brandon Smith scored two goals, and Jake Keller added a goal and assist in the opening 18 minutes for the Indians (6-1).
“All high school sports are so emotional. When you can do something like that, it’s a confidence booster,” Ketcham coach Scott Grimes said. “To John Jay’s credit, they came back strong. It has to take a little out of a team when they give up three goals in the first 20 minutes, but they played hard the whole game.”
The Indians surrendered an own goal before taking a 3-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Ketcham picked up goals from Cody Leung, Connor Tarquini and Keller. Grimes said the Indians received strong defensive play from Ken Godwin, Kyle Ioos, Daniel Ioos, Noah Robinson and David Siriboe.
“They all did an outstanding job,” Grimes said.
Ketcham’s Jordan Bishop and John Jay’s Shawn Flynn each stopped five shots in goal.
Ketcham travels to Freedom Plains to face the defending state Class AA champions from Arlington on Wednesday.
“We’ll have to play as well as we did (Monday). There are things to work on in practice (today),” Grimes said.
