The host Rhinebeck High School boys soccer team scored two goals in 121 seconds of the second half to defeat Red Hook 3-0 in the championship match of the Andy Bennett Sports Tournament on Saturday.
Rhinebeck has won the tournament five consecutive seasons, all coming at Red Hook’s expense.
“As usual, it was a great community event,” Rhinebeck coach Justin Wiesenthal said of the event named for a Hawks’ soccer player who died in a car crash in 1988. “Great crowd, great support.”
The support today was behind Rhinebeck star forward Seth McClenahan. After the senior scored a first-half goal off an Andy Rosenzweig assist, Rosenzweig and Ian Katomski each scored on headers in the second half. McClenahan assisted on the second goal off a corner kick, and Nick Hoynes made the pass on the third.
“A lot of people look to Seth to score, but the great thing about Seth is he shares the ball very well,” Wiesenthal said. “It was nice to see three different guys contribute to our goal scoring.”
The coach also said the Hawks (2-0) “defended as a team,” outshooting Red Hook 13-4. Eric Rodriguez made three saves in goal for Rhinebeck.
The Hawks host Dover on Tuesday. The Raiders (1-1) visit Rondout Valley on Tuesday.
In the consolation match, Saugerties defeated Pine Plains 4-0. Mike Orlandi made one save in goal for the Bombers.
