James Murphy’s direct kick from just outside of the box sailed into the back of the net four minutes into the second overtime Friday night, and the second-seeded Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School boys soccer team rallied for a 2-1 triumph over archival and third-seeded Westfield in a Union County Tournament semifinal at Kean University.
The Raiders (13-4-1) will face top-seeded Elizabeth for the county title, 7 p.m. next Sunday again at Kean University.
Mate Landeka scored off a turnover inside the Raiders’ 18 to give the Blue Devils (10-5) a 1-0 lead with 2:39 left in the first half.
It didn’t take long for Scotch Plains-Fanwood to answer, though.
Just 90 seconds into the second half, Christian Zazzali converted a feed from Murphy to knot the game 1-1.
Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament second round
Timothy Christian 1, Spotswood 0: Zach Coyle scored off a rebound in the goal mouth following a shot by Ayub Yousaf in the second half to lift eighth-seeded Timothy Christian (15-2), which has won 15 straight. Keeper Evan Waldron had six saves for the Tigers and Matt Krause had seven saves for Spotswood (10-8).
Prep B Tournament first round
Wardlaw-Hartridge 5, Rutgers Prep 2: Ezer Browne scored both goals for Rutgers Prep (5-6-2) while Wardlaw-Hartridge evened its record at 9-9.
Woodbridge Academy 2, Henry Hudson 1: Brian Smighelschi scored in the 39th minute to give Woodbridge Academy a 1-0 lead at halftime and Varun Uchil scored off an assist from Ali Ben-Saad 10 minutes into the second half. Kyle Kopcho had 10 saves for Woodbridge Academy (3-11-1).
Ranney 4, East Brunswick Tech 0: Morgan Montgomery made five saves as East Brunswick Tech fell to 2-13.
Warren Tech 2, Middlesex Academy 0: Middlesex Academy fell to 4-9-2.
