Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament first round
Metuchen 2, South River 1: The Metuchen High School boys soccer team, the No. 22 seed in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament, scored a pair of goals within two minutes of each other in the second half to break a scoreless tie and held on for a 2-1 upset win of 11th-seeded South River in the first round on Thursday in South River.
Cameron O’Connell scored on a chip in from Brian Sullivan in the 49th minute and Frank McGuire headed in a throw-in from Hayden Keers-Flood in the 51st minute, as the Bulldogs will be at sixth-seeded Old Bridge on Saturday.
Fabio Lucas cut the South River (13-5-1) deficit to 2-1 in the 56th minute, but Metuchen held on, as the Bulldogs tied and lost its first two meetings with South River this season.
Ben O’Connell collected 13 saves for Metuchen while South River keeper Stephan Lukianov also made 13 saves.
Edison 2, Bishop Ahr 1: Dennis Amuzu scored a pair of second half goals off assists from Jordan Rosenhouse as 10th-seeded Edison (11-7) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit. Dave Pastore netted a first half goal for 24th-seeded Bishop Ahr (8-9). The Eagles will be at seventh-seeded North Brunswick on Saturday.
Sayreville 3, J.F. Kennedy 1: Fernando Maldonado netted a goal and two assists and Collins Aidoo and Matt Lasko also scored goals as 13th-seeded Sayreville (9-9-1) advanced to face fourth-seeded J.P. Stevens on Saturday. Keeper Danny Fernandez made 10 saves for 20th-seeded J.F. Kennedy (7-10-1).
Colonia 3, Highland Park 0: Brandon Bras scored off a pass from Dan Adao in the 11th minute as 15th-seeded Colonia held 1-0 halftime lead. Gabe Forero doubled the lead in 45th minute and Kevin Korycki scored in the final minute of play for the Patriots, who will be at second-seeded South Plainfield on Saturday. Ryan Litterer and Derek Phells combined for eight saves the shutout. Highland Park, the No. 18 seed, fell to 7-8-1.
New Brunswick 5, Perth Amboy 3: Omar Garcia netted three goals and two assists as 17th-seeded New Brunswick (6-9-1) topped 16th-seeded Perth Amboy (7-10). The Zebras will be at top-seeded East Brunswick on Saturday.
St. Joseph 8, Piscataway Tech 0: Tobi Oluwalana scored three goals and John Walton netted two goals and two assists as 12th-seeded St. Joseph won convincingly. Matt Nykolyn finished with two goals and an assist and Chris Taraska had three assists for the Falcons, who will be at division foe and fifth-seeded Monroe on Saturday. Josh Trapp made five saves for 26th-seeded Piscataway Tech (12-4).
Union Catholic 4, J.P. Stevens 3: Anu Dwivedi scored 2 goals and Casey He added a goal for J.P. Stevens (12-4), which led 3-1 at halftime.
Perth Amboy Tech 3, Manville 0: Gonzalo Bazan had one goal and two assists and keeper Angel Ramirez made 12 saves to propel Perth Amboy Tech (10-6). Paul Cabrera made eight saves for Manville (4-11).
Pingry 4, Bound Brook 1: Max Helfman scored three goals and Matt Mangini had three assists in leading Pingry.
Somerville 2, Hillsborough 1: Alex Noriega and Pablo Benegas scored second half goals and Alex Alarcon had two assists to pace Somerville (10-7-1). Nick Nugent made 11 saves for the Pioneers. Brian McEnroe scored in the first half for Hillsborough (9-6-4).
Bridgewater-Raritan 1, Immaculata 0: Anthony Sibaja netted a goal on an assist from Andrew Koury to lift Bridgewater-Raritan (8-9-1). Mike Werrlein and Omar Ahmed combined for nine saves for the Panthers while Blake Althoff made four saves for Immaculata (8-5-1).
Gill St. Bernard’s 9, South Hunterdon 0: Justin Durcan scored three goals and had two assists to lead Gill St. Bernard’s (14-3-1) as six other players each scored a goal in the win.
Montgomery 5, Warren Hills 1: Five different players each scored a goal as Montgomery improved to 9-5-3.
Summit 1, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 0 (OT): Eric Reyes scored a golden goal for Summit (8-6-3) as Scotch Plains-Fanwood fell to 12-4-1.
Plainfield 5, Cranford 0: Oliver Korngor scored two goals and Miguel Hernandez had two assists as Plainfield improved to 9-6-2.
Phillipsburg 2, Voorhees 1: Quinn Furnald scored a seond half goal to cut the Voorhees (5-7-3) deficit in half.
Dayton 2, Bernards 1: Danny Torres scored off a Matt Paonessa assist as Bernards (14-2-1) fell.
