It took more than an hour to occur, and it happened in the blink of an eye.
David Verdis’ goal late in the second half lifted the Arlington High School boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Lakeland on Wednesday in Freedom Plains.
After Eric Eastman found Verdis with a pass in 32nd minute of the second half, the senior forward broke a scoreless tie with 8:30 left to go.
“It was a hard-fought match from both sides. Lakeland played a very good game,” coach Craig Sanborn said after his Admirals won their fourth straight game to start the season. “It was nice to see the team respond and find a way to get that late goal.”
Arlington’s combination of Joe DeRosa and Ryan Wilson stopped every Lakeland shot, as the visitors fell to 3-2.
The Admirals host Hendrick Hudson on Tuesday.
Roy C. Ketcham 5, Our Lady of Lourdes 1 — Jake Keller scored four goals to lift the host Indians past the Warriors.
Connor Tarquini had the other goal for Ketcham. Patrick Burke scored Lourdes’ goal.
Jordan Bishop made six saves for Ketcham (2-0). David Pafumi made seven stops for Lourdes (3-3).
Beacon 2, Poughkeepsie 0 — Dimas Arroyo scored what proved to be the game-winning goal nine minutes before halftime for the host Bulldogs (3-1).
Brandon Bernardi scored in the second half, assisted by Vrajesh Patel, who coach Craig Seaman said was moved to defense as part of a shuffle in the lineup.
“I thought we did pretty well today,” Seaman said. “We were much better organized defensively.”
The Pioneers (0-4) were held without a shot on goal.
Beacon visits Arlington B on Friday.
Rondout Valley 3, Marlboro 0 — The host Ganders scored all of their goals in the first half in the game played late late Tuesday.
Yonkers Montessori Academy 1, Haldane 0 — Visiting Haldane dropped to 2-3 late Tuesday and travels to face Poughkeepsie on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
