Boys soccer roundup: New Paltz has stiff test in semis

The New Paltz High School boys soccer team took another step toward repeating as Section 9 Class A champion, with its biggest hurdle looming on Friday.

The No. 4 Huguenots scored three times in the second half on Wednesday to defeat visiting fifth seed Port Jervis 5-3. New Paltz (7-8) will travel to take on top-seeded Wallkill (17-0) in the tournament semifinals on Friday.

“We know they are a very good team,” said New Paltz coach Stuart Robinson, whose team lost both regular-season meetings with Wallkill. “We have to elevate our play if we want to go on to the sectional final. We know we have our hands full.”

Robinson said the quarterfinal was played 10 against 10 for most of the game, after a double red card was called early in the first half.

After Enzot Suazo put Port Jervis ahead 1-0 at the 17:21 mark, New Paltz scored twice before halftime, one from Gabe Gaston and one from Ryan Pinto, to take the lead for good.

The teams traded goals throughout the second half, with Sam Weinman scoring twice for New Paltz and Pinto adding another. New Paltz outshot Port Jervis 13-5.

“I thought we did a good job possessing the ball today, and using the entire field,” Robinson said. “I thought that created some opportunities for us.”

Haldane 8, Tuckahoe 0 — Host and second-seeded Haldane scored six first-half goals in advancing to Sunday’s 11 a.m. Section 1 Class C final at Arlington High School against top seed Solomon Schechter.

Ramsey Heitmann and MacDara Heanue scored two goals apiece for the Blue Devils (10-6-1). Jay Marchese, Jack Lovell, Seth Warren and Garrett Quigley each had one goal, and Peter Hoffmann stopped six shots in goal.

Wallkill 1, Red Hook 0 — Corey Scheibling’s second-half goal on an assist from Sean Cray at 23:13 lifted the top-seeded Panthers to a Section 9 Class A quarterfinal win.

Zac Decker made eight saves for Red Hook, which finished its season at 7-8. Jason Diehl made four saves for Wallkill.

Goshen 2, Marlboro 0 — Luke Mahon made six saves for seventh-seeded Marlboro (7-7), which lost a Section 9 Class A quarterfinal game to the second seed on the road.

Andy Wright and Alfredo Pacheco scored for Goshen (14-3), with both goals coming in the second half.

Warwick 2, Franklin D. Roosevelt 0 — The seventh-seeded Presidents (6-7-4) were knocked out of the Section 9 Class AA playoffs by the host second seed.

Spencer Creighton turned away 12 shots from Warwick (14-3).
