Boys soccer: Shea and Arlington stick with it, win 2-1

By

Chris Shea stayed with the play, and the Arlington High School boys soccer team stayed in the Section 1 Class AA playoffs.

Shea scored the winning goal for the Admirals, heading in the rebound off his own miss midway through the second half, and the tournament’s No. 1 seed defeated visiting No. 9 Roy C. Ketcham, 2-1, on Monday in Freedom Plains.

Arlington (17-0-1), the defending New York state Class AA champion, will host No. 4 John Jay in the semifinals on Wednesday.

Shea scored the Admirals’ first goal as well, in the 12th minute of the first half off Peter Garson’a pass. Ketcham (11-6) tied the score three minutes after the halftime break, when Jake Keller got behind the defense on a long throw from Andrew Geisler to beat Joe DeRosa (four saves) for the goal.

“I thought we were real solid (defensively),” Arlington coach Craig Sanborn said. “Keller got free a couple times. He’s a good player. He’s going to get free a couple times.”

Sanborn said his team turned up the pressure on Ketcham and goalie Jordan Bishop (eight saves) following the equalizer, and eventually Shea broke through with his decisive header.
