Spanish Springs’ Victor Garcia established an early lead when he scored the first goal of the Division I North Region championship on Saturday in the 4th minute.
Wooster scored the next two goals to defeat an undefeated Spanish Springs, 2-1, and earn the regional title at Bishop Manogue. “It’s exciting, it’s always exciting,” Wooster coach Jorge Vieyra said. “Especially when we, the Colts, never make it this far. They come as the underdogs and they play their hearts out to win a championship.”Vieyra, who has been a part of the Wooster coaching staff for nearly a decade and in his third year as head coach, finally saw the Colts win the highest regional honor. Wooster and Spanish Springs tied 2-2 in their regular-season matchup. Wooster, a team comfortable with passing and keeping the ball low, used past experience to defend the Cougars’ long-ball style of play.
