Megan Kugelmann struck out 10 hitters and allowed just one bloop base hit as Cocoa Beach throttled Bishop Moore 10-0 in the Class 4A softball regional quarterfinals.
The Minutemen advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal to again face Astronaut, a 13-0 winner at Lake Highland Prep.
“She’s been pitching really great lately. She’s given up just a few hits in the last several games. One-hitter tonight. she’s looking strong going into Tuesday,” said Cocoa Beach coach Wayne Moore.
Brevard County teams went 4-1 a night after starting 0-4 in the regional quarterfinals.
The Minutemen (22-5) scored one run each in the first and third innings before busting the game wide open with six in the fifth inning.
They ended the game with two more in the top of the sixth.
“We just had to adjust. We had to wait, and we had to stay on top of the ball,” said Moore of his pitching.
Cocoa Beach tallied 16 hits, including two extra-base hits, a triple by Kugelmann and a double by Lauren Silva.
The War Eagles improved to 23-3, and pitcher Hannah Denny got her 21st win in 24 decisions.
Bri Hatchcock went 4-for-4 at the plate.
“The girls swung the bat well and jumped out and kept the pressure on,” War Eagles coach Jeff Landers said.
CLASS 6A: Both Palm Bay and Eau Gallie won Thursday to advance to another meeting in Tuesday’s regional play.
The Commodores (18-10) won on the road, beating Deltona 12-3, while the Pirates claimed a 5-1 win over Seabreeze. Eau Gallie pounded out 15 hits, including a double by McKenzie Conley.
CLASS 2A: Covenant Christian was eliminated at home by Oasis Christian, 11-8. Jamie Tewalt went 3-for-4 for the Lions.
“Unfortunately, we both had the same number of hits, so good defense on both sides,” said Covenant coach Dawn Townsend. “It was close all the way.”
