A young Pennfield team saw its season end on Wednesday when it fell to Buchanan 56-24 in Division 3 State Team tournament regional semifinal wrestling action at Comstock High School.
Despite having 11 first-year wrestlers and just four upperclassmen on their 14-man lineup, the Panthers turned in a respectable season, finishing with a 10-10 record. Last week Pennfield defeated Olivet 40-36 in the district finals to advance to the regionals for the first time since 2007.
“For being such a young team, I thought we had a really good season,” Pennfield head coach Matt Koyl said. “To make it this far was an accomplishment and it was really good for our young guys to get this regional experience.”
Pennfield’s Kurtis Babcock (103), Dylan Huff (119), Austin Tuttle (125) and Justin Parker (189) each earned victories against Buchanan.
The No. 7-ranked Bronson wrestling team had a successful day in Decatur at a Division 4 state regional tournament.
In the regional semifinals, the Vikings slammed Niles Brandywine 69-9 while Constantine defeated Lawton 40-25. In the finals Bronson beat Constantine by a 40-18 margin.
The No. 7-ranked Vikings will return to Battle Creek for the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2009, when they made a run at a state championship, losing to Hudson 37-25 in the finals.
The quarterfinals will be held at Kellogg Arena on Feb. 22.
