Buckeye Central off to a 7-0 start

NEW WASHINGTON

In his five years as head coach of the Buckeye Central golf program, Phil Loy has never seen a start quite like this.

Consistency on the course has led the Bucks to a 7-0, 5-0 NCC start, most recently defeating Bucyrus (2-1, 2-1 NCC), 168-173 at Cranberry Hills on Thursday.

“We knew we could be pretty good, because the last two years we’ve only graduated one guy each year,” Loy said. “They were both a big part of the program, but it’s not like we lost three or four guys, and this year I’ve got four seniors (Adam McGinnis, Randy Mason, Matt Sheibley and Joey Baxter).”

McGinnis, a four-year lettermen, has been leading the way for the Bucks, with a low score of 35 so far this season at the Seneca East Invitational. He’s followed closely behind by sophomore Tanner Zaebst, and the pair have put up the most consistent scores across the board for Buckeye Central. In addition to the other seniors, the varsity rotation also has included Derek Shell, Aaron Walter and Dillon Weithman.

“It kind of shocked me to be undefeated,” McGinnis said. “I knew we had the potential, but I didn’t know if we would step up to the plate.”

Like McGinnis, Loy is confident in his team’s abilities to continue to have a successful season, but understands his players have to continue to improve and remain as consistent as possible to do so.

“Our one and two man have been pretty consistent so far this season,” Loy said. “I told them the rest of the team, three through six, have to be pretty solid and they are all capable of it. We are going up and down a little bit and maybe shooting a bit higher than we should be, but we’ve been able to hang on.”

The Bucks aren’t looking to slow down anytime soon, but will take a much-needed break today before getting back in the swing of things early next week. Buckeye Central hosts Crestline on Monday, and Tuesday they travel to Valley View Golf Course to play Colonel Crawford.

“As a team we just need to stay consistent like we have been,” McGinnis said.

“We’ve got one or two consistent in the 30s, whether it’s me or Tanner, and the rest in the low to mid 40s and it’s working out well.”
