Byers’ team motto is no mercy.

It showed on Friday against Bogue Chitto.

Using a stiffling full-court press defense, the Lady Lions forced 38 turnovers and dominated the Lady Bobcats 72-35 in the semifinals of the Class 1A girls State Tournament.

Byers will play Hinds AHS on Thursday at 1 p.m. in its quest for a third straight gold ball.

“We were able to set the tone early on defense and get turnovers that led to easy baskets,” Byers coach Jason Thompson said. “Now we got our opportunity to play for a third straight state championship and that has been our goal all year.”

In addition to forcing 38 turnovers, Byers collected had 24 offensive rebounds.

“We were just big on the boards today,” Thompson said. “We got to do the same on Thursday.”

ShaDai Nelson led Byers (27-5), ranked No. 1 in 1A, with a game-high 12 points. Richenda Crutcher chipped in 11 points for the Lady Lions.

Zariah Matthews led Bogue Chitto with 11 points. The Lady Bobcats finished 27-8.

“Byers is just an overall good team,” Bogue Chitto coach Christi Terrell said. “Their defense was just overwhelming.”
