Byrd season in review


Byrd is playing in its first state championship game since 1962, and the Yellow Jackets’ storied run was filled with offensive explosions and defensive clampdowns.

Week 1

Byrd 58, Zachary 21

The Jackets scored the first 44 points in a little more than a quarter en route to the school’s largest point total in an opener. Tyler Johnson and Tyler Howard each accounted for two scores in the run.

Week 2

Byrd 63, Bastrop 8

No slowing down in Week 2 as the Jackets scored two non-offensive touchdowns as part of a 56-0 run to end the game. Center Ryan Downey returned an onside kick for a score.

Week 3

Byrd 48, Calvary 21

The Jackets rattled off 42 consecutive points as the squad outscored its opponents 169-50 in their first three wins.

Week 4

Byrd 56, Mansfield 36

Dominique Hill and Mansfield hung tough, but the Byrd offense ripped up the scoreboard for a fourth straight week. Louis Mills rushed for three touchdowns while Dominic Haggerty added another two.

Week 5

Byrd 55, Lakeshore 21

The Jackets weren’t bothered by the travel to South Louisiana, hanging 50 points on an opponent for the fourth time this season.

Week 6

Byrd 28, Airline 3

The Vikings held a 3-0 halftime lead, but the Yellow Jackets forced three second-half turnovers that spurred the comeback.

Week 7

Byrd 28, Captain Shreve 3

Backup quarterback Duece Casten took over for an injured Tyler Howard and threw two of his three touchdowns to Jordan Powell.

Week 8

Parkway 52, Byrd 29

A Marquis King interception return turned a four-point game in the third quarter into a rout in what was one of the most hyped regular season games in city history.Byrd commited six turnovers in the loss, including a Tray Walker pick-six in the first half.

Week 9

Byrd 49, Southwood 6

Even without running backs Louis Mills and Keven Starks, six Jackets scored in a blowout win.

Week 10

Byrd 34, Haughton 13

Byrd’s plodding offense can hit the big play, and a Tysen Hardman 64-yard run and a Rodney Lee 65-yard run opened up a comfortable win in the second half.

Byrd 24, Shaw 0

The defense recorded its first shutout while the offense did enough to advance against the first of what will be three straight Catholic League opponents.


Byrd 14, Holy Cross 10

The Jackets defense rose to the occasion again, stopping Holy Cross three times in Byrd territory in the fourth quarter. Treyveon Allen, replacing an injured Louis Mills, scored the go-ahead touchdown.
