Maurice “Mo” Dixon, a 26-year coaching veteran, has been hired as defensive coordinator at Byrnes High School, Rebels head coach Bobby Bentley announced today.
Dixon, who has previous head coaching experience at North Broward Prep (Fla.) and Knott County Central (Ky.), has served most recently as the defensive coordinator at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Ga., where he has helped the Bulldogs to three consecutive region titles and a state runner-up finish in 2007.
“I had a goal to find the best defensive coordinator for Byrnes High School,” Bentley said in a news release. “After talking with Mo on several occasions, I knew he would fit well with our personnel and community. Mo will bring intensity and great technique to our defense.”
Twenty of Dixon’s former players are currently on college rosters, and at North Gwinnett, he helped the Bulldogs defeat top-ranked teams in the state three times and nationally ranked out-of-state opponents four times.
“The opportunity to be a part of the tradition-rich program at Byrnes and work with another great head coach is not only exciting it is an honor,” Dixon said in the news release. “Coach Bentley is known from coast to coast for his success on and off the field, and his love for the Byrnes community is widespread. The administration and community set the bar high for their students, and I feel that I can contribute to their vision.”
* Byrnes also announced that Terray Kelly has been named the school’s C team football coach. He replaces Tony Gillespie, who has taken over as athletic director at Byrnes.
Kelly, a 1998 Byrnes graduate, has been an assistant coach at the school for the last eight years.
