Byrnes High quarterback Shuler Bentley has repeated as Gatorade South Carolina Football Player of the Year.
Bentley, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior, passed for 5,032 yards and 71 touchdowns, eclipsing the state record of 59 he established as a junior. He also set a state record for career touchdown passes with 177, topping the mark of 169 set by former Northwestern quarterback Justin Worley, also a past Gatorade honoree.
Bentley led the Rebels to a 12-2 record and the Class AAAA Division I semifinals.
Bentley, who maintains a 3.44 grade-point average, has committed to Old Dominion University.
The Gatorade award recognizes athletic and academic excellence, as well as character on and off the field.
