Calmon's overtime goal lifts Mustangs


Senior midfielder Ryan Calmon scored the game-winning goal 42 seconds into overtime on a fast break as Brick Memorial edged Barnegat 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in a Shore Conference Class A South boys lacrosse game.

Calmon started the fast break with a pass to senior attackman Dan Bury and Bury flipped it back to Calmon. Calmon then bounced a shot into the net to end the game. The goal was Calmon’s only score of the game and the assist was Bury’s second of the game. Bury finished with a team-leading three goals for the Mustangs (1-0, 1-0). Senior attackman Steve Bruno added one goal and one assist and Senior goalie Chris VanBrunt made 13 saves.

Barnegat junior attackman Ethan Tonnesen had two goals and one assist and senior attackman Nick Anderson had one goal and one assist. Junior goalie Matt Grobelny had 25 saves.

MANASQUAN 11, SHORE 6: Blaine Birch scored four of his game-high seven goals in the first half as the Warriors (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Blue Devils (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A Central game.

Joe Murphy added three goals and two assists, JD Kuper added one goal and Jack Farrell made eight saves.

Shore senior midfielder Jesse Phalanukorn scored all four of his goals in the second half and also finished with one assist and senior goalie Andrew Johnsen made eight saves.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 15, HOWELL 6: Senior attackman Dan Bloodgood scored four of his game-high six goals in the first half and he finished with two assists as the Patriots (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Rebels (0-2, 0-1) in a Class A North game.

Sophomore attackman Brandon Nunez and senior midfielder Sean Koubek each had one goal and two assists. Senior goalie Todd Bitsko made 15 saves.

Howell senior attackman Alec Dambach had three goals and one assist and senior midfielder Tyler Verdoni had two goals. Senior goalie Tyler Ornstein made eight saves.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY 18, MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 4: TJ Coleman had three goals and four assists, Mike Iuliano had four goals and three assists and Nick Anzevino had four goals as the Lancers (2-0, 1-0) defeated the Griffins (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A Central game.

Pat Gribbon added three goals and two assists and Sean Sullivan made eight saves.

Monsignor Donovan’s John Underwood had two goals and Joe Giunta made 12 saves.

In girls lacrosse

COLTS NECK 18, ST. ROSE 12: Brittany Walko and Erika Keselman each scored four goals as the Cougars (2-0) defeated the Purple Roses (1-1) in a nondivisional game.

Kylie Allmers scored two goals, and had four assists. Kelly Ackermann made 15 saves for the Cougars.

In boys tennis

SOUTHERN 3, BARNEGET 2: Brandon Gildea won his match at first singles leading the Rams (1-1, 0-1) over the Bengals (0-2, 0-1) in a nondivisional game. Shjon Houser also won his match at third singles for the Rams 6-0, 6-3.

RED BANK 5, NEPTUNE 0: Ethan Neubelt secured a point at first singles leading the Bucs (2-0, 2-0) over the Scarlet Fliers (0-2 ,0-2) in a Class B North match. Alan Macioszek won his match at second singles.

In boys volleyball

TR EAST 2, BARNEGAT 1: The Raiders (1-1) won the final game, 25-20, to beat the Bengals (0-1) in a nondivisional match.

East’s middle blocker Evan Turner had two assists, seven blocks and 11 kills. Senior setter-opposite Jake Nicol had two aces, 10 assists, four blocks and five kills. Sophomore setter-opposite Tyler Luszik added 13 assists and sophomore outside hitter Justin Nicol contributed five kills.

For Barnegat, junior outside hitter Frank Buckley had four kills and seven digs. Junior setter Bobby Erickson added 19 assists.
