MONROE – University High right-hander Manny Miles tossed a no-hitter, and the Cubs used a seven-run third inning to take control of a 12-1 victory against Calvary in the Class 2A state baseball semifinals here Friday.
Tied at 1 after two innings, the Cubs (29-6) blew the game open with six unearned runs off Garrett Williams in the third inning. From there, Miles took control.
Miles, a sophomore right-hander and son of LSU football coach Les Miles, allowed a run in the second inning when he lost command of his fastball. Aside from that slip, Miles (11-0) kept Calvary (28-6) completely off balance.
“I relied on (my fastball) all day,” Miles said. “I’ve just got to hit my spots. I lost it a little bit in the second inning, but you have to battle and find it again.”
Miles’ effort and multi-run innings in the third and fifth (four runs) propelled U-High into Saturday’s 1 p.m. Class 2A state championship game against third-seeded Evangel, which defeated Kinder, 1-0, in Friday’s earlier semifinal.
