Canterbury fails to keep pace with Community School of Naples in boys soccer region quarterfinal

Canterbury School became the first boys soccer team to score on Community School of Naples in six games Wednesday night. But nothing much else went right in being eliminated by the Seahawks from the state playoffs.

Junior Martinez scored a hat trick, senior Scott Brooker scored twice for CSN, and junior Mikhael Crespo had two assists as the Seahawks beat the Cougars 5-1 in a region quarterfinal game at Community School.

Senior midfielder Luke Felts scored the Cougars’ only goal of the game, preventing CSN from pitching a shutout. It was the first goal CSN surrendered in six games.

“I was disappointed in how it went. We’ve had a difficult season all year,” said Canterbury coach Phillip Morris. “We’ve had a lot of injuries this year. If we’d had more people healthy, it might have been a different game. I don’t know if we’d have won, but it could’ve been a different game. I was proud of how a lot of people played.”

Morris especially praised the play of Felts and goalkeeper Xylo Smith-Pajares.

“If not for Xylo, they could’ve gotten more goals,” Morris said. “Community School has a good offense. They have great movement off the ball, and we couldn’t cope with it early.”

The Seahawks now face either Evangelical Christian School or First Baptist of Naples in the region semifinals on Saturday night at Community School.

“Scott and Junior both have a great nose for the goal,” said CSN coach Ed Bradley. “Every goal we scored tonight made us play better. We’re confident going into the next game because we’ve beaten both First Baptist and ECS. But then again, that may not mean a whole lot. Now that we’re in the playoffs, it’s a whole new ball game.”

Community kept the ball on the Cougars’ side of the field for most of the first half. Both teams had two indirect kicks in the first, but couldn’t put in a header.

The Seahawks finally broke on top late in the first half.

Tyler Canady centered the ball perfectly for Brooker, who put it in the net at 6:47 to give the Seahawks a 1-0 advantage.

Four minutes later, CSN went up 2-0 when Brooker scored off a feed from Crespo.

The Seahawks led 2-0 at the halftime break.

Martinez scored eight minutes into the second half, with an assist from Crespo, to make it a 3-0 game.

Felts scored with 11:55 to go in the game.

Martinez scored twice more in the final eight minutes.
