Cape Coral flexed its muscle and showed the strength of its offense as it beat East Lee County in Lehigh Acres on Friday night.
The Seahawks were more experienced on the offensive and defensive line, and took advantage of that throughout the game.
Senior running back Eamon Smart ran for four touchdowns, and quarterback Dylan Bontrager threw for three more as the Seahawks amassed 386 yards of total offense. Bontrager threw for 261 of those yards.
The game was delayed in the second quarter because of lightning in the area, and was also bogged down with penalties. The teams combined for 26 penalties for the game.
This is Bontrager’s first year as a starter.
“He knew this summer he was going to be the guy, and so he said to the team, ‘hey guys, we have to make this happen’,” said Seahawks coach Larry Gary.
“He’s making better reads because of more experience.”
The East Lee offense was scrambling all night trying to stay away from the tenacious Cape Coral defense. Many times Jaguar quarterback Winfred Ward was trying to escape the Seahawks rush.
In the third quarter they put together scores on consecutive drives to pull with 31-14. Both scores were thrown by Ward. The Seahawks had pulled their starters by this time. When the game got close, Gary reinserted his first string, and they came back to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
