No. 4 Carl Hayden senior midfielder Andres Leon slotted a picturesque volley from just inside the penalty area to propel his team to a 4-3 victory in overtime against No. 13 North in the first round of the Division I state tournament.

Senior forward Eddie Garcia got Carl Hayden (15-3) off to a fast start thrilling the fans with two spectacular finishes from the right side of the box less than one minute apart from each other with 30 minutes to go in the first half.

“He has a lot of willpower to keep pushing,” Coach Abner Calderon said. “For the most part of the season he has played on the defensive side, because we want that grit on the back…But we know if we have him up front, he is eventually going to provide that extra class, that extra effort that we want in order to win a game.”

North (11-6-2) exploited the Garcia-less Carl Hayden defense, scoring three goals off set pieces in regulation and almost hitting the potential game winner with two minutes to go, as a deadly header from a free kick careened off the crossbar.

“I don’t think the set plays were as dangerous as we made them look,” Calderon said. “It’s because of lack of communication. Moving on, you cannot allow those mistakes to happen. That’s something that I need to go back and address in practice obviously.”

Despite letting in three goals senior goalkeeper Roberto Ochoa came up big at times. There were a couple of powerful shots unleashed from North that could have sent the game to penalties, but the diving Ochoa was up to the challenge.

“All I told him going into OT was that everything was done,” Calderon said. “Whatever happened during regulation was done. He needed to move forward and step it up for the team. Sometimes he is the last option, he needed to come up with the big play and he did.”
