Junior Cody Henry hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Catholic High held off defending Illinois Class 3A state champion Marian Catholic, 8-4, during the opening round of the Bishop Moore Catholic Challenge on Tuesday in Orlando.

Catholic continues play in the eight-team, five-day event at 7 p.m. today against Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian.

The Crusaders entered the fifth inning tied 2-2 with Marian Catholic until Henry’s grand slam broke open the game.

Catholic pitcher Nick Helton, who is 3-0 on the season, picked up the win, giving up one earned run on five hits in six innings of work.

Evans Bozeman helped lead Catholic at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run.

The Crusaders’ Bronson Chancellor also had two hits and an RBI.

Marian Catholic’s Reggie Johnson, who signed with the University of Missouri, suffered the loss.

Cutchens lifts Pace

Trailing Milton 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Pace’s Jameson Cutchens blasted a walk-off two-run homer to keep the Patriots undefeated in District 1-6A with a 3-2 win.

Chris Stout was hit by a wild pitch to lead off the inning for the Patriots. Connor Baker then bunted Stout over to second, but was thrown out at first before Cuthens’ game-winning hit.

Eagles top Tigers

Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Brown struck out 14 batters in seven innings, and Pine Forest rolled past Pensacola High 4-1.

Brown held the Tigers to four hits and one run with no walks, while D’Anthony Johnson hit a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning to seal the Eagles’ victory.

Royals edge Chiefs

Taylor Kelley hit a two-run double and scored the winning run to lift Jay past District 1-1A rival Northview 7-6.

Down 6-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Kelley slapped a double to bring in two runners and tie the game 6-6. He later tried to steal third, but Northview made an error on the throw, allowing Kelley to run safely home and end the game.

Tate Upton led off the inning with a double for the Royals and scored on a Zach Carnley single.

Harrison lifts Jags

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth and the game tied 6-6, West Florida scored five runs to hold off visiting North Forsyth (Ga.) 11-6.

Kyle Harrison got the scoring started for the Jaguars with an RBI single that brought in Bradley Mercer.

Pitcher Jonathan White held North Forysth scoreless and struck out four out of five batters faced in 1.1 innings of work.

Royals blank Chiefs

Handing Northview its first loss of the season, Jay rode the shutout performance of Chassity McCranie to a 6-0 win in District 2-1A action.

McCranie fired a three-hitter with five strikeouts at the Chiefs (10-1), improving to 5-5 on the season.

Offensively, Jay (13-6) erupted for 10 hits, led by the two-hit performances from Ashlyn Geck (2-3), Olivia Wright (2-3) and Destiny Herring (2-4). Camille Driver added a two-run triple in the win.
