A pair of Licking County sophomores, who might meet in the state finals this weekend, recently were honored by the state coaches association.
Licking Valley catcher Kori Caughenbaugh and Granville pitcher Abby Barker each were named to the Division II All-Ohio first team. Caughenbaugh has been the leadoff batter for Valley’s powerful lineup this season. Barker has pitched four consecutive shutouts during postseason play for the Blue Aces.
Lakewood sophomore catcher Emily Kidwell was named to the second team. Valley sophomore pitcher Shelby McCombs and Granville senior shortstop Rachael Holt were honorable mentions.
In Division IV, Newark Catholic senior center fielder Caroline Wollenburg was named to the first team for helping the Green Wave to the regional finals. Senior pitcher Maggie Yocum was named to the second team.
In baseball, NC senior pitcher Mitch Cox was named to the second team.
PNB/Centratech dropped a pair of close games in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 2-0, to the Zanesville Junior Pioneers on Sunday. Nate Benschotter was the tough-luck loser, allowing three hits and recording four strikeouts in the first game. Zak Hutte had two hits for Newark (0-2).
