Sometimes in baseball there’s a razor’s edge difference between having a big inning and scoring runs and missing the opportunity to plate them.

The Central Magnet Tigers saw it occur Wednesday as they fell to the Dyersburg Trojans 5-0 in the Spring Fling Class AA state tournament elimination game. The Tigers had an opportunity to have a big inning in the first inning but missed it.

With the loss, the Tigers’ season came to an end. They lost earlier in the day to No. 1-ranked Pigeon Forge 9-2.

Central got the bases loaded with one out and Alex Ropp stepped up to the plate. He smashed a line drive right back to Dyersburg pitcher Dylan Walters.

Walters was barely able to get his glove up in time to knock the ball down. Then he threw to home for the force out.

Walters then induced John Messick to hit a popup to second base to end the inning.

“We had an opportunity to break it open early and we didn’t,” said Central Magnet coach Buddy Powers. “We hit a shot. It almost took the pitcher’s head off, and we didn’t get anything out of it. Give them credit. They played hard and bounced back.”

Walters settled down and only allowed three hits the rest of the game, four overall. He struck out six Central batters as he kept them off-balance.

“He had good command of all three of his pitches, and his changeup was really on today,” said Dyersburg coach Tom Mathis. “That’s his money pitch.”

The Trojans’ first two runs came in the third inning on an error. With John Mathis on third and Clark Newsom on second, Central pitcher Austin Worley threw to third to try to pick off Mathis. The throw went into left field and both runners scored.

The Trojans added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Walters helped his own cause with a two-RBI single, and Will Bradshaw doubled him home.

In only their second year competing in baseball at the TSSAA Class AA level, the Tigers their first Spring Fling. They had some injuries at the end of the season, but still were able to win the district and region, as well as a sectional game.

“You wish that you had everybody healthy, but that’s just part of athletics,” said Powers.
