Central Magnet made history this cross country season



Central Magnet’s cross country program made school history in 2013, winning its first state team title in any sport while also having its first female state champion in any sport.

Today, the school also highlight’s The Daily News Journal’s 2013 All-Area Cross Country Team.

Two members of the Tigers’ Class A/AA state champion boys team received first-team honors in seniors Andre Hillsman and Noah Delk. They helped lead the Tigers’ pack. Hillsman was third at state and Delk was sixth in the A/AA meet.

On the girls side, Class A/AA state champion Claudia Smith is honored with a first-team accolade.

And coach Jason Wooten has been named The DNJ’s 2013 Coach of the Year.

Hillsman and Delk are joined on the boys first team by Riverdale’s Brandon Harvey, Oakland’s Eli Leskinen and Siegel’s Drake Uselton.

Harvey finished eighth at state to lead the county’s Class AAA runners. Harvey was also the Region 4-AAA champion. Leskinen, the county meet champion, finished 12th to lead Oakland’s runners. Uselton was 16th to lead Siegel.

Rounding out the girls’ first team were Siegel’s Nicole Gardner and Kiera Weems and Riverdale sisters Emma McClellan and Maddy McClellan. The four Class AAA runners were consistently the top four in Rutherford County at the AAA level.

Gardner finished third in the Class AAA state meet and held the area’s best time at state in 18:40.40. She also was the Region 4-AAA champion and country champion. Weems was often second behind Gardner at local meets this season and was 32nd at state.

Emma McClellan was 22nd at state and third in both the Region 4-AAA and county meets. Maddy McClellan didn’t complete the state meet due to illness, but was fourth in the Region 4-AAA meet and county meet.
