Central picked up its first win of the season with a 7-3 victory on the road against rival Southside. Konnor McCoy pitched all seven innings for the Bearcats to pick up the win. She struck out seven batters.
“That was a big burst of energy for us,” Central coach Billy Vance said. “We needed to get that win today to get over the hump.”
Both teams’ bats were cold for the first four innings, before each team had a big fifth inning. Central (1-4) scored five runs, and Southside (0-7) followed with three runs.
McCoy had two hits, as did teammate Maddy Rhoades. Southside was led by Shelby Cumings, who had two hits. Mariah Archey pitched a complete game for the Rebels. She struck out five batters and walked three.
* Yorktown 11, Delta 2: A big third inning propelled Yorktown to a victory against rival Delta. Grace Lumpkin had a big day for the Tigers.
Lumpkin had three hits at the plate, and was also the winning pitcher. She pitched five innings and allowed one run, striking out five batters. Kendra Saunders, Amanda Laughlin and Nicole Ridgeway each had doubles for Yorktown.
Yorktown coach Chrissie Saunders credited her team’s discipline for the Tigers’ big offensive performance. The Tigers finished the game with 11 hits.
Ericka Pursley led Delta with two hits, including a solo home run.
* New Castle 3, Shenandoah 1: New Castle pulled out a tight win against Shenandoah, which stranded nine runners in the low-scoring game. New Castle’s Abbey Renner struck out eight in a complete-game performance. Rachel Krathwohl had eight strikeouts in relief for the Raiders, who didn’t allow an earned run.
