Central quarterback Knight lost for season with broken leg

Hunterdon Central High School senior quarterback Mike Knight is out for the season with a broken left leg, football coach Matt Perotti said Saturday.

Knight was hurt being sacked late in the first period of Friday night’s 34-7 win over Westfield in Raritan Township. Central, 4-0, is No. 1 in the Courier News Top 10.

Knight isn’t expected to require surgery, but eight to 12 weeks of rehab, Perotti said. Junior left-hander Bobby Cole, who played well after Knight left the game, will now be the starter.

“It’s really a shame because Michael is an outstanding young man and I truly believe the best quarterback in the area,” Perotti said.

Knight had thrown 56 passes, completing 37 for 530 yards and seven touchdowns with three interceptions before Friday. He threw four TD passes Sept . 27 against Elizabeth in a 42-7 triumph and managed a TD drive on Friday’s opening possession.

Knight rotated at QB with the graduated Jon Delello in 2012, but still threw for 1,288 yards (85-for-140) and nine scores. He also ran 35 times for 166 yards.

Central also played without junior halfback Marquel Beckett (concussion symptoms). He didn’t suit up against Westfield and won’t play in Friday night’s home game with Hillsborough (2-2). Perotti said Beckett is expected to play a week from Friday against unbeaten Phillipsburg (4-0) at Maloney Stadium.
