Central Regional junior right-hander Andrew DiPiazza fired a no-hitter and struck out 16 to lead the host Golden Eagles to a 2-0 win over Point Pleasant Boro on Tuesday in a Shore Conference Class B South game.
It was the first no-hitter in the Shore Conference since last April 12, when St. John Vianney’s Dan LaMorte threw one against Rumson-Fair Haven. It was the first one by a Central pitcher since Joe Rusk threw one against Jackson Liberty on April 28, 2009.
The Golden Eagles scored in the sixth when Rich Galati beat the throw home on Tom Clark’s ground ball to second and Nick Bondulich scored on Josh DellaPietro’s sacrifice fly to right.
FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 1, MANCHESTER 0: Chris Talbott scored the winning run on a throwing error on a failed suicide squeeze bunt with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Patriots (2-0) defeated the Hawks (0-1) in a nondivisional game.
Freehold Township had been no-hit by four pitchers before Talbott led off the ninth with an infield single.
TR EAST 9, TR SOUTH 6: Senior catcher Tyler DeFlilippo’s two-run home run in the top of the third broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Raiders (1-0, 1-0) the lead for good as they defeated the Indians (0-1, 0-1), ranked No. 7 in the Asbury Park Press Preseason Top 10 Poll, in a Class A South game, and snapped an 11-game losing streak to their sister school that dated back to April 11, 2008.
DeFillippo was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Sophomore shorstop John Meola was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Dave Lewis was 2-for-4 with two RBI and winning pitcher Paul Schifilitti had two hits.
JACKSON MEM. 11, BRICK MEM. 4: Joe Demaio’s one-out RBI single in the top of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie and Spencer Young added a three-run double later in the inning as the No. 4 Jaguars (1-0, 1-0) scored eight runs and went on to defeat the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A South game.
FREEHOLD 5, RED BANK 4: Two runs scored on a throwing error on an infield single by Zach Mulhern to cap a three-run fifth inning as the No. 10 Colonials (1-0, 1-0) rallied for the win over the Bucs (0-1, 0-1) in a Class B North game.
TR NORTH 4, LACEY 2: Karl Blum struck out 10, pitched two-hit ball over the first five innings and went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Julian Feliz went 1-for-1 with three walks and scored three runs as the No. 2 Mariners (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Lions (0-1, 0-1) in a Class A South game.
DONOVAN 5, CANANDAIGUA (N.Y.) 0: Senior left-hander Rich Power fired a complete-game one-hitter and struck out eight as the Griffins (2-0) recorded the win in Orlando, Fla.
