CIML girls' basketball: Dowling beats Indianola 43-33

Indianola, Ia. — High fives and low scoring ruled the basketball court Friday.
Dowling Catholic beat Indianola 43-33 in a matchup between two teams ranked fifth in the state – Dowling in 5-A, Indianola in 4-A.
They’re two of the top defensive teams in Iowa. Indianola holds foes to 31.5 points a game, Dowling 32.5.
“They play exactly like us,” Dowling guard Alicia Crivaro said.
Dowling’s Katie Mauk scored a game-high 15 points, 11 of them in the second half.
The Maroons (8-1) prepared for a defensive showdown over the holiday break. Indianola hadn’t given up more than 40 points against a foe this season – and still hasn’t.
“We really pushed it in practice for 10 days straight,” Mauk said.
The teams combined to make three 3-pointers as the defense ruled.
“Dowling’s always been an excellent defensive team,” Indianola coach Bert Hanson said. “My kids gave a good defensive effort, too.”
Becca Hittner scored 10 points for Dowling. Audrey Faber added eight.
Indianola (7-3) was led by Erica Davidson’s 11 points. She made both of her team’s two 3-pointers. Ally Orwig scored nine.
Indianola scored the first six points, holding Dowling scoreless for more than 4 minutes at the start. The Indians held an 8-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Hittner made three baskets in the last 3 minutes of the second quarter to give Dowling a 20-17 halftime lead.
Orwig completed a three-point play to give Indianola a 28-26 lead with 1:27 left in the third quarter. Mauk followed with a 3-point basket and Hittner added another score for a 31-28 lead.
Dowling kept the lead throughout the rest of the game. Crivaro, who scored six points in the game, sank four free throws in the final minute.
A little extra shooting practice over break helped give Dowling a modest offensive boost. Players showed up early and stayed late during open gym sessions.
“Normally, people arrive 2 minutes before we start and leave right after we’re done,” Crivaro said.
Dowling co-coach Bob Hanson said Indianola has a strong, veteran team.
“They’ve got all seniors, so they have kids that have played for four years,” he said.
