Class AA: Pierre senior Hanson leads Govs to semis

By

Creighton-bound, 6-foot-9 senior Zach Hanson scored 30 points and the second-seeded Pierre Governors rolled to a 60-47 quarterfinal win over Rapid City Central at the Arena in the Class AA state boys basketball tournament.

Pierre (18-5) opened up a 17-4 lead in the first quarter, utilizing Hanson’s height and heft. The Governors’ 34-21 halftime lead included 19 points from the senior post player on a 9-of-11 performance from the field.

It became clear early in the second half that there was only so much the Cobblers (10-12) were going to be able to do.

“We got out and starting running our stuff,” said Hanson, who also had seven rebounds. “We played aggressive and did what we do – we worried about our game more than the other team’s.”

His drive for two with 5:45 to go in the third quarter gave Pierre a 43-21 lead. The Cobblers, who had come into the tournament with seven wins in their last nine games, did not let Pierre ever completely take control, but trailed by double-digits the entire four quarter.

“Inside-out is the way we want to play,” Pierre coach Terry Becker said. “If we can get it into Zach on the majority of the possessions, we’re a tough team to stop. That allows us to stretch the defense on the perimeter.”

Lane Severyn added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Governors, who hit seven 3-pointers. The Cobblers were led by Nathan Miller, who scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. John Fierro added 12 points and Jesse Riddle had 11.

“I thought we were a little more confident against the junk defense,” Becker said. “We’re seeing that a lot more recently here in the playoffs. We got guys who are getting used to the fact that they’re just not even getting guarded.”
