ROCHESTER, N.Y.-\Cleveland Hill beat Wayland-Cohocton 46-20 Saturday afternoon to advance to the class C state semifinals. Its the Eagles first win in four tries in the Far West Regionals.
Cleve Hill drew first blood with a 31 yard Jared Watkins touchdown catch from Aaron Jackson on fourth and eight from the 29 yard line. That gave Cleveland Hill the early lead in the first quarter.
Cleve Hill’s Wayne Jones caught an eight yard touchdown pass from Jackson with 10:04 left in the second quarter to give Cleve Hill a 16-0 lead. With 9:45 left in the first half, Cleve Hill would strike again with a three yard touchdown run by Keon Crawford to take a 22-0 lead.
Cleveland Hill led 22 to 6 at halftime.
Wayland-Cohocton started the scoring in the second half with a Devon Harris five yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 10. 26 seconds later Cleve Hill’s Brandon Thomas broke through for an electrifying 80 yard touchdown run to give Cleve Hill a 30-12 lead.
Cleve Hill also scored on special teams. After Wayland Cohocton muffed a punt Grayson Taylor fell on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.. Devon Harris scored on a 33 yard touchdown run for Wayland-Cohocton to cut the Cleve Hill lead to 18.
With 5:26 left in the game Cleve Hill’s Brandon Thomas ran for a 40 yard touchdown to give Cleve Hill a 46-20 win.
Cleve Hill’s Thomas ran for 214 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Aaron Jackson was 7-11 for 107 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win Cleveland Hill will play Chenango Forks in the state semifinals next Saturday at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon.
