Members of the Clear Lake baseball team sat in the stands as Mason City Newman wrapped up its state title and waited for their opportunity to help make history.
When the chance came, they took advantage of it.
Second-ranked Clear Lake won the Class 3-A baseball title with a 6-2 victory over unranked Davenport Assumption Saturday night.
Clear Lake’s first baseball title marked the first time that two Cerro Gordo County schools won baseball titles in the same season.
“I was just thinking, ‘Let’s get one of them for us,’ ” Clear Lake second baseman Brock Adams said. “They’ve (Newman) had a couple, so it’s our turn.”
The Lions, in just their third appearance in the tournament, watched from the stands hours earlier as Newman wrapped up the 1-A title. Players from both teams talked after the 1-A game about making history.
“We just told them, ‘Nice job and we’ll try to win one for you too,’ ” Clear Lake pitcher Jerry Kockler said.
Clear Lake (38-3), which trailed 2-0 after three innings, broke loose in the fourth, sending 10 hitters to the plate while scoring five runs.
The Lions added another run in the fifth, and that was all Kockler needed. The right-hander struck out six and scattered 14 hits while consistently working out of trouble.
“There wasn’t a second in that game where I didn’t feel like I had to make a pitch,” Kockler said. “I couldn’t take any pitch off or they would have stomped on me.”
Assumption (26-16) missed out on a chance to tie a state record with Kee of Lansing with its ninth state title, stranding 10 base runners.
“It’s good we got here, but we lost,” Assumption catcher Zach Adrian said. “We should have won.”
