With the Class 4A-6 district title at stake, the Tigers rallied to beat the Cowboys in overtime.
Clewiston (8-1, 3-0) went first in overtime and, on the second snap, Tigers sophomore quarterback Davis Witt found tight end Derrick Jackson alone in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass.
The Cowboys (3-6, 2-1) had their overtime chance but on fourth down, quarterback Hugo Vargas was picked off by the Tigers’ Angelo Tolbert.
Robinson had a solid rushing game for the Cowboys and racked up 142 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown. Fullback Jerome Baxter also scored and had 95 yards on 7 attempts.
After a porous first half, the Tiger defense finally got into the contest and held the Cowboys to 41 yards rushing and a minus 4 yards passing in the second half.
Clewiston, improving their record to 8-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the district, captured home field advantage for Round One of the playoffs in two weeks.
Tiger Coach Pete Walker was excited and greatly relieved after the tight win, saying “This was a great, gutsy win for our team. We made a lot of early mistakes but we kept coming back and made the plays when it mattered.”
