CN baseball: Somerville hands Bernards first loss

The Somerville High School baseball team registered its biggest victory of the season on Friday afternoon defeating Bernards 6-5 in a Skyland Conference Raritan Division matchup, handing the Mountaineers their first loss of the season.

Somerville (9-3) scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at five before adding one more in the top of the seventh to take the lead.

Adam Roche was 3-for-3 for Somerville with a double and two RBI. John Maddaluna was 2-for-4 with a run scored and four stolen bases for Bernards (11-1). Senior outfielder Johnny Maddaluna was 2-for-4 with a run scored and four stolen bases for Bernards.

Gill St. Bernard’s 4, Bound Brook 3: Brendan Dougher was hit by a pitch in the bottom half of the eighth inning which gave Gill St. Bernard’s the victory. The Knights’ Matt Taylor drove home a run to tie the game at two in the bottom of the seventh, which ultimately sent the game to extra frames. Bound Brook scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth to go ahead 3-2 before Mark Leonhard and Nick Blackman opened the bottom of the eighth with singles for Gill St. Bernard’s. Leonhard scored on a Luke Beveridge fielder’s choice and Wes Spear was intentionally walked, which brought Dougher to the dish.

.South Hunterdon 4, North Plainfield 3: Toby Coleman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jimmy Smiegoski pitched three scoreless innings of relief, picking up the win for South Hunterdon.

Timothy Christian 7, East Brunswick Tech 2: Jeff Parker tossed a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead Timothy Christian (3-8) over East Brunswick Tech. Luke Cruver had two hits and drove in three runs for the Tigers. Anthony Forgue drove in both of East Brunswick Tech’s (4-8) runs in the third inning.

Pingry 11, Manville 0 (5 inn.): Ryan Toomey finished 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and three runs scored while teammates Cole McCollum and Mike Silbert both went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Brian Miller picked up his first varsity win hurling four shutout innings.

Belvidere
8, Somerset Tech 4: A 3-3 ballgame was blown open when Belvidere scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mike LaFace had a two-run double for Somerset Tech (6-3) in the first inning.

Dunellen 15, Cardinal McCarrick 1 (5 inn.): Matt Heidinger, Dylan Hoski, John Baldino and Rian Markus all drove in two runs each for Dunellen. Timmy Waimer drove in the Cardinal McCarrick run of the afternoon.

Dayton
3, Union Catholic 1: Anthony Colletti struck out seven for Union Catholic (10-3) in Union County Conference Mountain Division game.
