CN softball: Brady, Gonnella lift Watchung Hills over Montgomery


Junior left fielder McKayla Brady delivered a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and lift the Watchung Hills High School softball team to a 2-1 victory in Warren.

Junior first baseman Deanna Gonnella singled in Gina Priore earlier in the inning to erase a 1-0 Montgomery advantage. The Cougars scored their run in the second inning with pitcher Gilian O’Connor coming home on a groundout.

Abby Cline allowed a run on four hits, walked one and struck out nine for the Warriors (7-2), while O’Connor finished allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out one for Montgomery (1-8).

North Hunterdon 2, Immaculata 1: Junior Mason Spichiger allowed a run on six hits, walked none and s truck out nine to lead second-ranked North Hunterdon to key Skyland Conference Delaware Division victory. Kayla Parker handled the offense for the Lions (7-4), delivering a two-run homer in the first inning and finishing 2-for-3. Josie Novak pitched well for Immaculata, allowing just three hits, two walks and striking out eight. The Spartans (5-3) scored a run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Melissa Wiegartner.

Voorhees 9, Delaware Valley 0: Haley Fedak tossed a no-hitter, walking four and striking out seven as Voorhees rolled. Fedak added a 3-for-3 day at the plate, tripling, scoring three runs and driving in two more. Erin Hollyfield finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Nicole Kozak chipped in two hits, including a homer, two runs and two RBIs for the Vikings (7-1). Delaware Valley fell to 2-9.

14, Ridge 8: Amanda Jordan hit for the cycle, finishing 4-for-4 with a run and two RBI, and Shannon Fillmore posted two hits and two runs scored to power Franklin (3-5). Brittany Rickard went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Kristina Mueller posted two hits, two runs and an RBI for Ridge (2-8).

South Plainfield 6, North Brunswick 1: Caroline Ratti finished posted three RBI for fourth-ranked South Plainfield (6-3). Winning pitcher Shannon McMahon struck out six while yielding two hits.

6, Linden 3: Julia Criscuolo delivered a two-run single and Elena Scarano ripped a two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as Westfield rallied for the victory. Criscuolo doubled twice in the game and drove in three runs, while Bobbi Snyder went 2-for-4 with a double and a run to send sixth-ranked Westfield (6-2).

Governor Livingston 5, Cranford 3: Caroline Hewitt ripped a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 3-3 tie and ninth-ranked Governor Livingston notched the road victory. Payton Murphy chipped ina two-run double in the foruth inning for the Highlanders (6-2).

Bound Brook 17, Rutgers Prep 0 (3 inn): Aimee Sarboukh collected three hits and delivered five RBI ,and Kim Burgess struck two hits and drove in a pair of runs to ignite Bound Brook. Megan Espositio added two RBI and Alicia Gianotti belted a homer for the Crusaders (4-4). Rachel Gross accounted for Rutgers Prep’s lone hit as the Argonauts fell to 1-5.

Hills 7, Somerville 4: Amanda Carisone finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Colleen Murphy added three hits and a run but Somerville fell to 5-4. Tori Triozzi chipped in two hits and two RBI for the 10th-ranked Pioneers.

5, Bridgewater-Raritan 0: Kayla VanValkenberg picked up two hits and Sarah Rebetje doubled for Bridgewater-Raritan (4-5).

East Brunswick 14, Piscataway 4: Gabrielle Kelliher went 3-for-5, including a three-run homer, to lead East Brunswick over Piscataway. Lauren Cram recorded four hits and scored four runs for the Bears while Ashli Venokur went 2-for-5 with three RBI.

Benedictine 10, Plainfield 0 (5 innings): Ajahnaee Ensely picked up a hit for Plainfield (2-3).
