CN softball: Watchung Hills edges Hunterdon Central


Freshman Amanda Hopeck doubled twice and drove in a run, and Jess Gaeta finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI as the fourth-ranked Watchung Hills High School softball team edged Hunterdon Central on Thursday, 5-4 in Raritan Township.

Gina Priore homered for the Warriors (8-3), while Abby Cline earned the victory, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

Caitlin Lake homered for the Red Devils (6-4), while Emily Zengel collected two hits.

Hillsborough 4, Immaculata 0: Senior right-hander Kelly Wishard tossed a one-hit shutout, walking two and striking out 12 for top-ranked Hillsborough. Immaculata junior righty Josie Novak, whose two-out, seventh-inning single was the lone hit for the eighth-ranked Spartans (6-4), allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out 11. Senior third baseman Alison Shimko led the Raiders’ attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and homer, while Alexis Pezza chipped in two hits and an RBI. Donna Conard got things going for Hillsborough (11-1), delivering a two-run single in the first inning.

7, Delaware Valley 6: Erin Galuchie, Salonika Muhammad and Amanda Jordan all homered for Franklin, which improved to 5-6. Muhammad led the way, finishing 2-for-3, including a double, scoring three runs and driving in two. Bailey Ferrara went 2-for-4 with a run and four RBI for Delaware Valley (4-11), which scored two runs in the top of the seventh only to see its rally fall short.

North Hunterdon 17, Bridgewater-Raritan 8: Lauren Martino went 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs and six RBI as third-ranked North Hunterdon’s offense came alive in Bridgewater. Kristen Cheesman added three hits, including a double, two runs and three RBI for the Lions (9-6). Sarah Rebetje paced Bridgewater-Raritan (4-8) with a homer and three RBI, while Lauren Gorski went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

7, Cranford 0: Elena Scarano threw an eight-hit shutout and struck out six, and Julia Criscuolo finished 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and four RBI to lead sixth-ranked Westfield (10-2) to its ninth straight.

South Plainfield 11, Perth Amboy 0: Holly DeLair smacked a two-run home run and teamed with Shannon McMahon to drive in seven runs as second-ranked South Plainfield (10-3) cruised.

Somerset Tech 15, Manville 5: Ashnee Patel went 3-for-3 with four RBI and Courtney Kahlsdorf went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a homer, three runs and three RBI to power Somerset Tech (6-3).

Linden 9, Governor Livingston 6: Missy Quinn went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, but ninth-ranked Governor Livingston had its six-game winning streak snapped in Berkeley Heights. Kacie Worswick finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for the Highlanders (8-3).

Wardlaw-Hartridge 15, Highland Park 0: Taylor Gerhart went 3-for-4 with a triple, homer, three runs and six RBI as Wardlaw-Hartridge rolled. Lacey Gress added three hits, three runs and three RBI for the Rams (10-0), while Ali Yamakaitis allowed just two hits and struck out nine in the four-inning outing.

Dayton 5, Union Catholic 4 (9 innings): Kelly Grieco went 4-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBI for Union Catholic, but Dayton scored a run in the bottom of the eighth in response to a Vikings run in the top of the inning, and added a tally in the bottom of the ninth, to win it. Nicole Valona also drove in a run for Union Catholic (6-5).

Phillipsburg 11, Montgomery 5: Montgomery fell to 2-10.

Warren Hills 10, Ridge 0 (6 innings): Amanda Berezny pitched a perfect game to drop Ridge to 3-11.

Rahway 6, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 4: The Raiders are 4-10
