Colonel Crawford takes top honors



A talented group of local softball players comprised this year’s Telegraph-Forum All-Crawford County softball teams.

Colonel Crawford’s Chuck Huggins was named Coach of the Year after leading his 18-10 squad to the Division IV state finals, while his senior pitcher, Nickyla Garverick, was marked Player of the Year.

Garverick (16-7) led the NCC with a 1.30 ERA through 161 innings pitched, and battled back from a mid-season ankle injury to lead the Eagles in their tournament run, recording 181 strikeouts. Offensively Garverick batted .465 with a .505 on-base percentage and .733 slugging percentage and three home runs.

A trio of Bucyrus juniors picked up First Team honors after leading the Redmen to an undefeated North Central Conference run (13-0) and trip to the district semifinals.Taylor Rossman (16-3) finished behind Garverick in strikeouts with 152 and finished with an ERA of 1.61. Rossman finished with a .381 batting average and a .587 slugging percentage with three home runs. Macey Sheerer batted .459 with an on-base percentage of .518 and slugging percentage of .689 and a pair of home runs. Laney Mollenkopf drove in 22 RBIs, hit two home runs and batted .370.

Galion junior Callie Bauer made the list finishing second in the NCC in batting average with a .588, second in on-base percentage, .606, and second in slugging percentage, .926, recording three home runs. A pair of Wynford players were named First Team in juniors Kelsey Redden and KarLee Schiefer. Redden topped the league in home runs with six and RBIs with 32, while batting .422. Schiefer batted .415, recorded 10 doubles and finished with 15 stolen bases.

Crestline senior pitcher Natalie Sayre and sophomore teammate Mara Huber represented the Bulldogs on the First Team list. Sayre (14-9) led the NCC in strikeouts with 220, finishing with a 1.61 ERA. Huber batted . 457, with an on-base percentage of .500. Buckeye Central senior Kendra Schultz made the cut, batting .407 and racking up 26 RBIs.

Bucyrus seniors Kylie Thompson and Hannah Hildebrand, Colonel Crawford freshman Lexi Hoepf and senior Kendra Hudson, Wynford senior Shannon Miller and junior Beth Ogden, Crestline junior Kelsi Ronk, Buckeye Central junior Morgan Wurm and sophomore Sierra Hanes and Galion senior Hannah Ivy all received second team honors.

Sami Tracey (Crestline), Maddy Garverick (Galion) and Bri Rankins (Colonel Crawford) were named honorable mention.
