Matt Connell was approved by the South Plainfield Board of Education on Wednesday night as the new boys basketball head coach at South Plainfield High School.
Connell, a 1998 graduate of Westwood High School in Bergen County, has spent the past four seasons as the Tigers’ junior varsity coach, including the past two under former head coach Justin Chiera.
It’s his first head coaching position, as he looks to build upon the principles Chiera preached and looks to pick up where Chiera left off and move the program forward.
“I just want to take what coach Chiera did the last couple of years and just continue the tradition he built,” Connell said. “Coach Chiera really set a standard on the kids working hard and playing for each other.”
Connell, who is also an assistant for the football team and the boys track sprints coach, is optimistic and excited about the opportunity.
“These kids have been willing to learn and willing to play for each other the past couple of years,” Connell said. “I’ve been here for a number of years and whatever sport I have coached I have always had the full support of the administration.”
