Cornell softball signee leads team to sectional final


Senior Olivia May struck out 14 and added a home run at the plate to power Elmira Notre Dame to an 8-2 win over Union Springs in a Section 4 Class C softball semifinal on Thursday.

May, who earned her 17th win, pitched a complete game and connected on a three-run home run to right-center field in the bottom of the fourth to put Notre Dame (21-1) ahead 6-0.

With the blast, May –who will be attending Cornell in the fall –set a new single-season record for the school with her 12th homer of the campaign.

In the bottom of the third, Notre Dame broke the game open. After right fielder Brooke Harvey brought home the game’s first run on an fielder’s choice, designated hitter Morgan Cox hit a two-RBI single to right-center, giving the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Cox went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBIs.

Sethon Centeral Catholic 3, Thomas A. Edison 2: At Elmira Heights, Sam Stento hit two home runs — a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth — to power Seton Catholic. Katherine Loughlin earned the win for Seton Catholic, which will face Elmira Notre Dame for the championship Saturday in Binghamton.

Boys tennis

The Half Hollow Hills East duo of Michael Leffler and Roger Cheng topped Ithaca’s Kevin Huang and Justin Milner, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the state doubles tournament at the USTA National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows.

Union-Endicott’s Evan Bail defeated Michael Haelen of Albany Academy 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Joining him in the second round of the main singles draw is Oneonta’s Emerson Kelly, who defeated Peru’s Johnny McAuliffe 6-0, 6-1.

Brothers Dominic and Jacob Parfianowicz from Elmira also advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over a duo from Baldwinsville. The brothers next play Coner Mullins and Jonathan Paris from Cold Spring Harbor of Section 8.

Section 4 Class B semifinals

Windsor 3, Chenango Valley 0: At Windsor, Morgan Starley threw a no-hitter, and allowed four base runners as Emma Benson’s first inning three-run home run was all the scoring needed for Windsor.

Starley finished with seven strikeouts and three walks for Windsor. Paige Rouch led the game off with a single and Allison Lockwood followed with a walk to start the game before Lockwood homered to left field.

Section 4 Class D quarterfinals

Edmeston 11, Worcester 0: At Edmeston, Catherine Johnson pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks to earn the win for Edmeston.

Sarah Lawrence finished 4-for-4 with a two-run home run in the fifth for Edmeston. She was a triple shy of the cycle. Catherine Johnson doubled twice with two RBIs for Edmeston.
