Cougars, Eagles improve to 4-0 in girls golf


Defending Monterey Bay League girls golf champion Santa Catalina School was one of two county teams to improve to 4-0 following matches held on Wednesday afternoon.

Santa Catalina defeated Pacific Grove 261-280 at Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey.

The Cougars’ Chloe Corriveau earned medalist honors, shooting a 1-over 37 to lead the squad. Kiley Gibbs shot a 40, Alison Mody shot a 53, Sophi Li shot a 65, and Anges Ames shot a 66.

Pacific Grove’s Lauren Molin led the Breakers with a 44, while Ashley Augilera shot a 55.

Santa Catalina returns to action Monday against Stevenson.

* Alvarez 278, Trinity Christian 287, Watsonville 320: At Monterey Pines Golf Course, the Eagles improved to 4-0 with wins over the Warriors and Wildcatz.

Salma Arrendondo paced Alvarez with a 49 to earn medalist honors in the matchup against Watsonville.

Alvarez’s McKenna Bowling shot a 53, Mariel Mercado a 56, Elizabeth Tamez a 54, Alex Guzman a 60 and Zuleima Alvarez a 66.

Ashley Yukihiro of Trinity Christian led all golfers in the three-team meet with a 44. Her sister, Hayley Yukihiro, shot a 47.

Watsonville was led by Leah Ancira’s 53 and Isabel Moreno’s 55. Alvarez doesn’t play again until next Wednesday when it faces Salinas and Pacific Grove at Salinas Golf and Country Club.

Salinas 255, Notre Dame 278: At The First Tee of Monterey County, the Cowboys edged out the Spirits.

Salinas’ Katie Hyland shot a 43 to earn medalist honors. Notre Dame’s Athena Enosara was four shots behind and finished second individually overall.

Also for Salinas, Andrea Zavela shot a 49, Joanne Lee and Savannah Marsh each shot a 53 and Isabella Pena shot a 57.

For Notre Dame, Emily Woodward shot a 51, Kyleigh White shot a 58, Kendre Bage shot a 60 and Alyssa Amaral shot a 62.

Girls volleyball

Pacific Grove 3, North Monterey County 0: At Pacific Grove, the Breakers swept the Condors 26-24, 25-22, 25-21 in the team’s final tuneup before MTAL play begins.

Kendra Lis had 12 kills and Corina Kaufman had four blocks for the Breakers, which won a day after losing to Monterey.

Pacific Grove will have nearly a week off before it returns to action Tuesday against Stevenson to open up the 2013 MTAL season.
