MURFREESBORO Goodpasture volleyball coach Lynn Dearing calls the school’s move from Class AA to A this season “a moot point.”
But there’s no doubt the defending Class AA champion has been unbeatable, competing against schools with smaller enrollments.
Goodpasture will take a 46-0 record into today’s 1 p.m. Class A winner’s bracket final against South Greene (37-2) at Stewarts Creek.
Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association records are incomplete, but the last recorded team to go undefeated was 1977 state champion Chattanooga Kirkman (36-0).
“It was a school decision,” Dearing said of the move to Class A. “Our administrators, collectively, made that decision. I think the entire athletic program came into play, what was best for everybody. We’re just basically the guinea pigs because we’re the first to compete in single-A division.”
Middle blocker Macy Reece, a 6-foot-2 Auburn commitment, had 12 kills and 12 aces in a 25-4, 25-5, 25-9 quarterfinal win over Madison.
She posted 19 kills and nine blocks in a 25-11, 25-9, 25-12 winner’s bracket semifinal win over Grace.
“It was definitely strange at the beginning, and we don’t really know many of the teams,” Reece said of being in Class A. “So it’s kind of difficult, but we’ve adjusted and we’re just excited to be playing.”
Setter Alana Holman led Goodpasture with 40 assists. Outside hitter Kylie Scruggs added 13 kills.
Class AAA: Ravenwood and Brentwood will meet for the sixth time this season today in the winner’s bracket final at 1 p.m. at Siegel. Ravenwood, the three-time defending champion, is 3-2.
The Lady Raptors (46-4) beat Farragut 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 and Houston 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-18.
Brentwood (57-3) beat Collierville 25-19, 25-9, 25-13 and Ooltewah 25-19, 25-13, 25-16.
Class AA: Hume-Fogg (40-10) beat Crockett County 25-10, 25-12, 25-12 and will play Page at 10 a.m. today at Blackman in an elimination match.
Page (24-19) beat Red Bank 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 but lost to CAK 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17.
Division II-AA: Ensworth beat St. Benedict 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16 and faces St. Agnes at 11:30 a.m. in an elimination match today at Stewarts Creek.
