Five Greenville County teams will vie for state soccer championships beginning today at Gilbert High School, but only one of the five is a newcomer to the finals.
J.L. Mann’s girls team has reached the state championship for the first time in the program’s history. The Patriots’ opponent in the Class AAAA final, Wando, is playing in its seventh consecutive final and is seeking its fifth title during that time and its 10th in all.
The Class AAA girls final is a rematch of last year’s event, in which Hilton Head Island defeated Eastside 1-0 for its second straight title.
Christ Church and Academic Magnet will play in the Class AA/A championship for the third year in a row.
The St. Joseph’s boys team won its first state title as a member of the South Carolina High School League in 2012. The Knights can win their second Saturday when they play Blackville-Hilda in the Class A final.
Also Saturday, Eastside’s boys will be after their sixth championship when they play Hilton Head Island in the Class AAA final.
